Summary: The Chemistry Department at Grand Valley State University invites applications for an affiliate faculty, full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track position. The Department values candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to quality and inclusive undergraduate education and value the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse population of students and colleagues. We welcome applicants from any area of specialization who have an interest in teaching 100 and 200-level courses.

Required Qualifications And Education

  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field
  • Evidence of effective teaching of lectures and labs as the instructor of record at the college level, particularly at the 100 and 200-level
  • Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse population of colleagues and students
  • Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated use of student-centered and inclusive teaching methods
  • Ability to teach general chemistry and in another subdiscipline

Responsibilities: Duties each semester include teaching lectures and labs in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and/or biochemistry. Additional teaching assignments may be made depending on the individual’s expertise, interests, and departmental needs. Affiliate faculty are expected to engage in continuing education that enhances their role as chemistry educators. Appropriate service activities within the Department are encouraged. Affiliate faculty typically teach 12 to 15 contact hours per week in lecture, discussion, and lab settings. The initial appointment will be for one academic year on a full-time basis. This may be renewed once for an additional academic year. Thereafter, individuals may be appointed for three consecutive academic years. After successfully completing seven (7) consecutive years at Grand Valley State University as an Affiliate faculty member, an Affiliate is eligible to apply for promotion to ‘Senior Affiliate.’

Salary/Benefits: Minimum starting salary of $52,000. Department/College: The GVSU Department of Chemistry is committed to high-quality undergraduate education, emphasizing teaching excellence using inclusive pedagogies, active scholarship with diverse learners, and equitable service to the university and community. We offer bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry and a Green Chemistry Certificate. Our over 40 full-time faculty and staff serve our 200-plus chemistry and biochemistry majors along with students from several other science majors. There are numerous collaborative opportunities for faculty and students across a wide group of partners within the department, across campus, and in the community.
