Last I checked, a physical footprint is a boundary. Planning and strategy require limits aka boundaries. “Boundless Possibility” is marketing fluff.

A new series called ROC City Concerts, featuring a special ensemble of Eastman School of Musicstudents and faculty, plus members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, brought live music to underserved communities in Rochester, including incarcerated individuals at the Monroe County Jail. That performance marked the first time Eastman musicians have held a concert in a correctional facility as well as the first time that music has ever been performed for members of Monroe County’s incarcerated population solely for enjoyment.“All people, regardless of their current life circ*mstances or the choices they have made, deserve the chance to feel human, and experiencing live music is one of the best ways to feel alive. We at ROC City Concerts look forward to bringing our music out into the community and to connecting with many different types of listeners,” says Elinor Freer, an associate professor of piano and chamber music at Eastman School and coordinator of the inaugural season.ROC City Concerts also performed for unhoused veterans living at Richard’s House (part of the Veterans Outreach Center); residents and clients at East House (for substance abuse recovery); high school students at Villa of Hope School; and for those who benefit from Spiritus Christi Church’s Prison Outreach, Mental Health Center, and Grace of God Recovery House.

Metrology is the science of measurement, including the measurement of light. Devices called optical frequency combs have revolutionized the field, allowing for the measurement of exact frequencies of light and leading to the development of the world's most precise atomic clocks. Yet challenges with developing frequency comb generators at a microchip scale have limited their use in everyday technologies such as handheld electronics.A team of Rochester researchers has developed a new microcomb laser that overcomes previous limitations and features a simple design that could apply to a broad range of applications, including telecommunications systems and self-driving cars.#URochesterResearch #NSFfunded

The doors are open to the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics’ new 66,600-square-foot office and lab expansion. The opening of the addition marks a significant milestone for the national research facility, allowing for the design and fabrication of the next generation of lasers, including the world’s most powerful laser—the NSF OPAL—being developed right here in Rochester! #BoundlessPossibility

Building on its storied biopsychosocial model of medical education, University of Rochester Medical Center was among the first in the country with a humanities division, and is now one of only eight academic medical centers in the nation to have a dedicated humanities and bioethics department. And when the new department's director, Lainie Ross, met Peter Christensen, the Arthur Satz Professor of the Humanities and director of the University's Humanities Center, “within five minutes, it was like we were old friends.” Now the two scholars are fostering greater collaboration among Rochester’s scientists and humanists on both sides of Elmwood Avenue. #BoundlessPossibility
