Draining with furnace patched....then draining with chest patched and inactive blocks patched....no idea wtf for. So how is it done now? Pre hardmode.

Please have some idea of the methods I'm referring to...because I'm trying to achieve the same result.

At this point, I think your best bet is hitting it with one of the other liquids it turns into blocks with, and just clean up the blocks. Or if it's water, dig it to hell so it slowly evaporates itself; I think they've patched every fluid deletion method players have discovered so far.
Alternately, lava fishing; the hotline hook is post hard, yes, but there's three bait creatures (magma snail, lavafly, hell butterfly) which can be caught with the golden or lavaproof bug nets, and they allow you to lava fish. From lava fishing is a) hooks to do more lava fishing, but more important to your question, b) you can fish obsidian crates, which have Wet Bombs in them. You can turn them into dry bombs (and the demolitionist will sell more wet bombs if you have them on hand), and dry bombs explode and dry up liquids. Post Plantera in hardmode, the cyborg sells rockets that do the same thing (Dry Rockets)

Draining with a chest+lava is certainly not patched -- I used it in my current game! You need to put the chest in a dry 2x2 hole below the water body, then add 2-3 buckets of lava (I prefer 3 to make sure). Then open the drain from your lake to the chest, making sure the water comes in from above the chest. (ETA: It only works for water, which has always been the case.)

Dry bombs are good, but if you can't get those, as Dragonlord says, you can pour the water down a hellevator (Make sure your torches are sheltered!) or use lava or honey to solidify it. It helps to pour the lava/honey from a height, so you get multiple partial blocks making contact as it falls.

You can also just make a stack of buckets and stash the water someplace out of the way until you have better means to deal with it.

I was attempting to drain lava at the time, I guess it only works one way. Thanks though.

Do you mean with those underworld creatures I can fish without the hotline hook? Just trying to understand what you mean.

Edit: Oh, damn. Well, I learned something. I'm gonna test this out for sure.

I caught a few of these critters but had no idea they functioned any differently.

Yup. Hellbait lets you fish in lava with any rod, but slowly. Once you get the Hotline rod or the Lavaproof Hook (which can be tinkered into the Tackle box), having any two of the three will let you catch things much more quickly.
