“Ribbet – ribbet – ribbet”, I croaked as I went up Frog Mountain in the Wild Sky Wilderness this sunny day.

Frog Mtn is not very distinctive

I parked at Jack Pass and headed up an old overgrown forest road. The old road switchbacked up the mountain a few times, getting more and more overgrown the higher I got.

Finally, I just headed straight up the fall line in fairly open timber and moderate brush. The vegetation was still very wet from dew or rain, so I wore my rain pants on the way up. Occasional hoof prints and game trails led me up the mountain quickly. The brush wasn’t too bad as it had not leafed out yet and soon I got onto higher and more open slopes.

The snow started right on the ridgeline at 4400’. It would have been easier to come up here a little earlier in the season when the snow coverage was lower, but you take what you get. From here it was a pleasant ridge stroll up to the high point.

The south slopes were open and free of snow and then nearing the top, I started noticing cut wood and a trail of sorts appeared. Huh? Just to the east of the summit was the culprit. Some sort of fiberglass obelisk sat deep in the snow with damaged solar panels on its south face. What was it?

A little research showed that it was a radio repeater. Zi Iob monolith I continued east a tad to a good lunch spot with views yet I forgot to take a nap. It must have been the influence of that obelisk.

After a good whiling-away-the-time at my resting site, I returned to walk over the warts on the frogs back and continue back down the mountain. The brush was now dry and I dropped quickly until I intersected the old road and finished the descent at a more leisurely rate on the road.

A ribbeting report as usual. But why didn't you go up on Toadsday, using tadpoles instead of hiking poles?

I like the obelisk marking the solstice and equinox. Such angles on it amplify alien energy. I hope it did not interfere with your cerebral energy.

Thanks for posting the Frog Mtn Report. There were Snow Frogs there in 1983

No remnants of an old trail? This was one of my first hikes - from Garland in about 1963.

This raises a lot of questions. There used to be a trail to the top? I found a few cut logs and faint tread right on the sharp ridge before the final part up to the summit but naively connected it with the radio repeater being there or just the usual ridgeline goat path. Why would there be a trail going up there? Was it a lookout location? And was there anything at the top in 1963?

There was never a lookout as far as I know - just good views. The old trail up from Garland, before all the logging on the north side of Jacks Pass, had the largest timber I remember ever seeing. It was like going up the High Divide in the Olympics - huge trees below opening up to large meadows above.

Shroder -- I enjoyed hearing about your circa 1963 hike from Garland to Frog Mtn. Here is part of the 1935 Snoq NF map. Looks like a trail. Wouldn't it be great to still have the mammoth trees? The question now is: Who is/was Pat Cox? (go to large size image) The dotted line with the alternating black half-circles is "Telephone line" per the map legend.

Pat Cox was a USFS employee whose own hand-built cabin was swept away in a 1920 flood. This map shows the Pat Cox "Lean-to," a cabin built by the Forest Service - I assume Mr. Cox lived in it during his USFS gig. The Pat Cox Lean To was a good way-stop for people journeying farther into the mountains, hence it's place on the map.
