Staff at crematoriums near Morbi, graveyards say they never saw huge influx of bodies in short span

Caretakers of crematoriums and graveyards in Morbi town of Gujarat said they never saw a huge influx of bodies in a short span of time in decades, which they witnessed in the aftermath of the bridge collapse tragedy that claimed 135 lives.

The British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in the town caved in on Sunday evening, plunging people into the water below.

Sajid Piludia of Morbi's biggest graveyard for Sunni Muslims said nearly 40 members of the Muslim community lost their lives in the incident.

"Of them, 25 were buried here and another one at a nearby graveyard on Monday. This was the biggest tragedy after the 1979 Machchhu dam breach incident," he said.

It all happened due to the negligence of the administration, a visibly upset Piludia said.

Yusuf Samada and Yunus Shaikh, working as grave diggers at that graveyard, said they dug 14 out of the 25 graves from Sunday night till Monday evening to meet the sudden influx of bodies.

"This was very unusual for us because we usually dig nearly 20 graves a month," he said. --PTI

Morbi bridge collapse: How suspension bridges work

The bridge that collapsed in Gujarat’s Morbi on Sunday was a suspension bridge.

The basic structural components of a suspension bridge system include stiffening girders, two or more main suspension cables, and towers and anchorages for cables at either end of the bridge. The balancing of the bridge has to happen within the permissible weight restrictions for the bridge, given that the deck is hanging in air, supported by the two sets of cables. But this is subject to two preconditions: there must be no overloading, and no excessive swaying.

Even as an investigation into the accident is pending, the visuals and purported footage prior to the incident seem to suggest that both these preconditions were possibility tested. Here's what could have happened

Congress expects gains in Morbi seat: ‘Modi saheb talks about defence equipment… govt can’t maintain a bridge’

Famous for its ceramic and clock manufacturing industries, Morbi has long been a BJPstronghold, with the party winning the seat consistently from 1995 till 2012. In the last Assembly elections, in 2017, while the Congress wrested the constituency, it eventually lost both the winning candidate and the seat to the BJP.

However,Sunday’s bridge tragedy, leaving around 140 dead ahead of the Assembly poll announcement for the state, is expected to change the political equations in Morbi.

The Congress’s win in 2017 had come against the backdrop of the Patidar quota agitation. With its substantial Patidar population, Morbi had been one of the key centres of the agitation. The Congress winner then, Brijesh Merja, finished by just 3,419 votes ahead of the BJP’s five-time winner Kanti Amrutiya. Read more

Morbi bridge collapse: Gujarat govt must be held responsible, says NCP leader

Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson Clyde Crasto on Monday said the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Gujarat must be held responsible for the bridge collapse in Morbi district in that state a day earlier in which more than 130 persons have died.

He alleged the work of renovation of this suspension bridge, on Machchhu river, was obtained after a "government tender", adding that it was opened for the public without a fitness certificate from the local civic body.

Questioning the Gujarat government for not being aware of this absence of fitness certificate when the repaired bridge was opened to the public (on Gujarat New Year Day on October 26), Crasto said the Centre must take up the issue seriously and "heads must roll" for the lapses. --PTI
