About Physicians for
Human Rights (PHR)

Since 1986, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has used medicine and science to document and call attention to mass atrocities and severe human rights violations.

PHR was founded on the idea that physicians and other health professionals possess unique skills that lend significant credibility to the investigation and documentation of human rights abuses.

We shared the Nobel Peace Prize for our work to end the scourge of landmines. And today, from Syria to Sudan, from Yemen to the U.S. border, we are using the unassailable facts of forensic medicine and scientific investigation to document human rights crimes and make sure that those who commit them are held accountable.

Our supporters believe in justice.

Protect Human Rights

With human rights abuses mounting worldwide, your support is urgently needed. Make a tax-deductible donation and fuel our ongoing work to:

  • Investigate and document U.S. immigration policies that harm immigrants and asylum seekers;
  • Seek justice for the attacks on medical facilities and personnel in Syria and Yemen;
  • Provide physical and psychological evidence of torture and ill-treatment to validate survivors’ voices and bring perpetrators to justice;
  • Shine a spotlight on the health effects of prohibited weapons like chemical agents and landmines as well as so-called non-lethal weapons like teargas and rubber bullets;
  • End impunity for sexual violence and bring justice to survivors;
  • Support health professionals and organizations in upholding medical ethics and human rights, including the core tenet, “Do no harm”; and
  • Mobilize forensic scientists and other experts to investigate and document mass crimes worldwide.

Justice is finally closing in on Syria’s state-backed killers, including the arrest of a former high-ranking intelligence official and two of his subordinates in February 2019.

Last year, we mobilized 21,000 + doctors and health experts to stop family separation at the U.S. border – an inhumane policy that was abandoned shortly afterwards.

Our crucial medical evidence helped convict perpetrators of child rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo of crimes against humanity and sent them to prison for life in 2017.

“Returning asylum seekers to Mexico endangers their lives and is a catastrophic stressor to their health and well-being. The amount of time asylum seekers spend waiting, whether in detention or in a setting where they feel unsafe, is often correlated with an increase in complex physical and mental health problems.”
— Dr. Mary Cheffers, PHR Asylum Network

Help us secure justice for survivors.

“The thing that really strikes me is that, despite all the horrors that we’ve been seeing, both among women and children, who have not been spared … these are the lucky ones — the lucky ones who were able to survive, trekking for days across the jungle to get here, even if they’ve had landmine injuries, gunshot wounds, or burns.”
— Dr. Rohini J. Haar, PHR medical expert
